Privacy Policy
For PinVari on the Mac App Store. Effective August 24, 2026.
Short version: PinVari for the Mac App Store collects no data. Everything you capture — screenshots, spoken notes, transcripts, the on-screen element you point at — is created and stored only on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded to us or to anyone else. There is no account, no login, no sign-up, and no tracking.
This policy covers the App Store edition of PinVari specifically (bundle identifier com.kak.pinvari.appstore), which runs inside Apple's App Sandbox. It is written in plain language because the honest answer is simple.
What PinVari does with your data
- Captures stay on your Mac. When you circle a region and speak, PinVari takes a screenshot, records your voice, and transcribes it. All of this is written to files in the app's own container on your Mac. It is never sent to us.
- Transcription is on-device. Your voice is turned into text on your Mac using Apple's on-device speech engine and a bundled open-source speech model (whisper.cpp). Your audio is not uploaded to any cloud service.
- No analytics, no tracking, no ads. The App Store edition contains no third-party analytics, advertising, tracking SDKs, or crash-reporting services. We do not collect usage data, identifiers, or diagnostics.
- No account and no payments in the app. The app is a one-time purchase through the App Store; Apple is the only payment processor. There is no login, and the app never asks for personal information.
Permissions and why they are asked
- Microphone — records your voice only while you are actively capturing, so it can be transcribed on your Mac.
- Speech Recognition — turns your voice into text on your Mac (Apple's on-device engine). Nothing is uploaded.
- Screen Recording — takes the single screenshot you circle on, only at the moment you complete a capture.
- Accessibility (optional) — lets PinVari read the name of the exact button or field you point at, so a capture says "the Save button" instead of a blind coordinate. It is clearly marked optional.
You grant each permission through macOS itself and can review or revoke any of them at any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
Connecting a local AI agent
PinVari can hand a capture to an AI coding assistant already installed on your Mac over a strictly local connection (127.0.0.1 / localhost). This connection never leaves your machine and is not reachable from the internet. If you choose to connect an assistant, PinVari writes a small configuration file for that assistant on your Mac, with your consent — no data is sent to us.
Optional model download
You may optionally choose to download a higher-accuracy on-device speech model. That download fetches a model file only; no personal data or capture content is transmitted in the process.
Data sharing and sale
We do not collect your data, so there is nothing for us to share or sell. We never sell, rent, or trade any user information — because we never receive any.
Children
PinVari is a productivity tool for people who build software. It is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update this page and its effective date. Because the app collects no data, any change will be about clarity rather than new data practices.
